Schon Simrock (1870, S. ) hat den Begriff »Liederspruch« oder auch »Spruchlied« geprägt. Darunter versteht er die dreistrophigen Töne, die »enger verbunden eine Art Ganzes« bilden (Simrock 41869, S. , S. 318; Ranawake 1996 will den Terminus auf 13,5ff. und 124,1ff. ausdehnen). Seiner Ansicht nach sind also die dreistrophigen Töne innerhalb kurzer Zeit entstanden – eine Auffassung, die sich nicht durchweg halten läßt – und zeigen Affinität zum Lied.

Und auch Schweikle sieht die Initiative für Walthers Stellungnahmen zur politischen Situation um 1198 eher bei diesem selbst als bei irgendwelchen Auftraggebern: »Zumindest scheint die politisch hochgespannte Atmosphäre den Minnesänger zur politischen Spruchdichtung angeregt zu haben« (1994, S. ).
